#LentRetreat2013

Loved by God

Comments Off on Loved by God

Last year about this time, I went on a four-day retreat at the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur and was surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation. For an extrovert it was a little unnerving at first to be at a monastery where silence was required most of the time. As the days went by and I was joining the Benedictine monks in their daily rhythms of prayer, Eucharist and Adoration, I began to melt into the silence and solitude offered to me. I allowed myself to rest in God and be loved by God with a closeness and tenderness. On retreat our director shared this beautiful homily by Pope Francis in which he urges us to pray for the grace to allow ourselves to be loved by God!

Day 43 ~ The Appointed Time

Comments Off on Day 43 ~ The Appointed Time

Loving Jesus,

The appointed time has come again to enter into the events of your Passion, death and resurrection.

Thank you for these forty days of preparation that have enabled to stretch and grow.

I know I still have a long way to go as I struggle to be your faithful disciple

but may the memory of this Lent remain with me always.

Amen.

The appointed time has arrived. Time to look back on this Lent and  feel good about consistency or regretful about broken promises. The appointed time has arrived to set our eyes on the central mystery of Christianity as we are about to celebrate Holy Thursday and the model of the servant leader. The appointed time has arrived to face the horrific story of the Via Dolorosa on Good Friday. The appointed time has arrived to prepare ourselves to enter the hushed tomb of Holy Saturday and ultimately, the glory of the great Easter Vigil.

“. . .My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”  Matthew 26:17

Today is officially the last day of Lent! Does that mean that we are ready to celebrate the resurrection and can now let go of our prayer, fasting and alms-giving? Perhaps to a legalist but to those of us following the Spirit, the real sacrificing, the appointed time,  has just begun. Starting tomorrow, for three days (called the Triduum) we will immerse ourselves into the Paschal (Easter) mystery as we walk in the footsteps of Jesus with the universal Church.

Day 42 ~ Betrayal and Denial

“Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me. . . .the cock will not crow before you deny me three times.” John 13:21, 38

Even Jesus did not escape the effects of human dysfunction. The gospels leading up to Good Friday show how weak his friends really were.  Despite seeing him work miracles and hearing his charismatic teaching every day,  they fell easily into temptation. Before we feel superior,  ask yourself what you might have done in the same circumstance. Let us acknowledge that Judas and Peter dwell within us all.

Compassionate and Forgiving God,

So many times has my soul felt fractured from betrayal and denial.

I do not blame others for I, too,  have brought this darkness into the world.

Help me to overcome these human but destructive temptations

by remembering Judas and Peter.

After the fall,  let me not feel despair but embraced

 by your love.

Amen.
