“…they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” John 6:18

Early morning high tides in Southern California can take me by surprise during my contemplative prayer walks on the beach. Recently, right in the middle of deep pondering over the many cares and concerns on my heart, I found myself engulfed in water. Like long filmy sheets of silk, the tide furled out from the sea and  had spread over the sand with astonishing speed and beauty. When I looked down at the ground at my feet,  for a split second, it was if I was walking on water. My shoes were soaked but my spirit elated. For one little slip of time I felt weightless and free of the worries I was trying to give back to God that morning on the beach. It was as if I had heard Jesus whispering in my ear, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
