During the month of June, my twenty-something backyard tortoise comes fully to life after six months in hibernation. At first, in the late Spring, he acts like Rip Van Winkle, barely moving and blinking bleary-eyed at a world he doesn’t recognize. After consuming twice his weight in lettuce and strawberries, this phase quickly gives way to a fast-moving, aggressive posture, appearing always poised for a fight, Pity my unsuspecting puppy who was only looking for a friend! The encounter was not what he expected! Spike the tortoise (aptly named), was ready to snap his nose off. We had to quickly remove Wylie the pup from trying to make peace not once but multiple times. While they are still far from best buddies, the pup remains persistent. Attempts at peace-making are never simple. Becoming like a child again (or a puppy), may be the only way.
