“…do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” Matthew 10:19
Why is it so difficult to talk about God?
Today is the Feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr, stoned to death for speaking about his love of Jesus Christ. Pondering this today, on the second day of Christmas, I am struck by our reticence to talk about our faith and how we have become hyper-sensitive for fear of alienating anyone when we do. The wo subjects we are taught not to talk about are religion and politics. Judging from the number of radio talk shows and what people post on Facebook, we don’t follow the rule about politics. But religion remains a tough one for most people. Many simply do not feel comfortable nor do they have the right words to convey something very deep and personal. After many years on the journey, my simple advice follows this Scripture passage from Matthew’s gospel. Most of the time, it’s about getting past fear and trusting that the Spirit wants to speak through me. How do I know? Here’s a simple rule of thumb.. .the Spirit wants to speak the most when your heart starts to beat wildly and everything in you wants to bolt! All you can do then is pray that you have the courage to get out of the way.
