“. . .and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;”  Matthew  6:13

Because of its familiarity, we often take the timely words of the Our Father for granted, especially the plea for what lies at the heart of real compassion: forgiveness.

For some of us, forgiveness comes easy. For many others, forgiveness holds us back from true  happiness. An interesting point of reference as we pray the Our Father, we are asking God to forgive us as we forgive others. If our forgiveness, then, is puny and withholding, we are in essence saying that it is ok for God to be just as ungenerous with us. That’s a frightening thought! Rather, let us pray that our hearts will expand and be as generous as God as we detach and let go of the stockpile of hurts we have endured.
