Mary. . .anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. John 12:2

As the events of Good Friday draw near, Jesus reveals his true identity through not only his actions but those of others. Mary of Bethany not only anoints Jesus for his burial while he is still alive but also singles him out as the Christos – the Anointed One.  Fragrant oil, massaged into weary feet, can feel and smell like heaven on earth. Whether you are the one receiving the anointing or the one giving it, the vulnerability of the action produces  an unspoken intimacy, a communion of sorts, between the participants. How beautiful to know that Jesus had such moments in his life, that he knew what it was like to be loved by intimate friends and that he wanted us to do the same for each other, even on the eve of his betrayal.
