“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

But what is humility? Being self-effacing? Always protesting any affirmation or recognition of a job well done?  Hardly.  Consider this: Once, when I was learning about the spiritual journey, I thought I should stop teaching and writing because people were noticing and affirming my talents. Fearful of exaltation of the ego, I wanted to fade into the background. Gently and kindly, a priest friend reminded me that the definition of humility is truth. The humble place is acceptance of the truth about ourselves and using the gifts and talents bestowed upon us by God. Falling down on my knees, I was humbled by being set free to be myself.
