Images of strength attract and comfort us in this uncertain world. We all need a rock that we can cling to, feel firmly under our feet. Since Jesus is no longer physically available, we search for human beings who can embody this strength for us. We project our needs onto them and are sorely disappointed when they crumble or reveal their feet of clay. Times like these can make us cynical and suspicious and yet, if we turn to Peter, poignantly singled out in all of his weakness, we realize that Jesus doesn’t expect perfection. All He requires is faith in Him, the source of all real strength.
