“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace. . .” Luke 2:14

How do I experience this timeless message?

T.S. Eliot wrote that the Incarnation is “the gift only half understood.”  While I totally agree, perhaps  that is the inevitable  limitation of such a great mystery. Rather than give up trying, I challenge myself each year to delve deeper, to find another aspect of the prism of light that has been glorifying the world for so long.  Do you ever wake up with a song in  your head that you cannot erase? This strange phenomenon can be extremely annoying, to be sure. But what if I awoke each day singing the words of the Gloria, as proclaimed in Luke’s gospel? Working, shopping, cooking, doing the dishes, or sitting in traffic, all the while, “glory to God,” plays over and over in my head, illuminating even the most mundane moments with light. Maybe only then have I let the Incarnation penetrate into my very soul. What a wonderful gift! Better than anything under the tree today!
