The expression, “free as a bird,” has been on my mind during this July discussion about the nature of freedom. Bird-watching has long been a fascination. While I’m not an avid “birder” who searches rare sightings, I do enjoy observing the birds in my yard, on the beach, during my daily walks. The fact that they can fly away from danger and seem to be having enormous fun circling the sky or hanging out on telephone wires makes them objects of envy. How great it would be to take flight! Many of us have clipped wings and cannot soar. Freedom gets limited, often at a very young age, by people and circumstances beyond control. Learning how to fly, in the spiritual sense, can happen if we are wiling to risk and leap off a comfortable perch into the arms of God, waiting eagerly to set us free.
