Growing up, I was always told that the little things in life that make our joy complete. How many of you had a white Madonna vase in your childhood home like the one in this picture? They were abundant in Catholic residences all over the country in the fifties and sixties and our family home in Minnesota was no exception. Pristine white, stalwart and beautiful, Mother Mary graced our living room every season of the year. Today, so many years later, the vase resides with me in my California home and I am still captivated by its beauty. Mary’s stately stance, the baby Christ held close to her heart, exudes a sense of quiet and peaceful joy that completes me. Each year, always in May around Mother’s Day, I gather the pungent pink and white sweet peas that grow wild on the hillsides this time of year just for her adornment. Their fragrance fills my home with remembrances of all that is nurturing, holy and good, what I received from my mother and what I hope to pour out into the world.
