The Dies Irae (dee-eys eer-ey)  in Verdi’s Requiem is one of my favorite classical pieces. Originally written as a 13th century Latin hymn describing Judgment Day, the Catholic church used the Dies Irae hymn in its funeral rite up until The Second Vatican Council. Verdi’s trumpets and kettle drums and eerie sopranos take me to that moment where I am witnessing the battle of good and evil taking place right in front of me. Have a look, and have a listen… or five.
