Dependence does not come easy to some of us. We are taught, as good Americans, that we can have it all if we but rely on our own hard work and ingenuity. But such fierce tenacity can also give a false sense of our own power. When we think we can do it all alone, the need for God lessens. Only a crisis, like a death, sickness, or a natural disaster, can humble us enough to realize we are not in control at all.
