According to theologian Thomas Aquinas, the value of all moral action is based on individual freedom. Weighted down by addictive tendencies, he claims that no one is completely free and thus cannot ever love unconditioanlly, the way that God loves us. This rings true when we go about our lives trying the best we can not to control, possess or project our needs on others. Even the easiest to love among us, our own children, can be a challenge. Love with “no strings attached,” not expecting anything in return, may be the most difficult thing we attempt as we try to imitate Christ. Starting with the people closest to us, let us pray each day to be healed from the dysfunction that imprisons and prevents us from loving freely.
