The gospels leading up to Holy Week give us a clue about how enraged people can get when their seemingly pious ways are challenged. In this case, Jesus speaks to them in the synagogue in his own home town of Nazareth. Using rather extreme examples from Scripture passages that the natives undoubtedly knew well, he categorically condemns their lifestyle. When they try to throw him off a cliff in anger, Jesus disappears through the midst of them, thus proving his freedom from time and space.
