Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?” Matthew 20:18
Today’s scene in Matthew’s gospel brims with drama and challenge. The mother of James and John (the Sons of Thunder) implores Jesus to put them at his right and left when he enters his kingdom. Jesus bluntly tells her that she doesn’t know what such a request really means and asks them the pointed question above that basically foreshadowed his suffering and death. In order to unite with Christ, we must drink not only with Him but of him. We must consume him intimately, be willing to know his passion up close and personal. While many of us might say we are willing, do we really know what we are asking?
